Secondary Success

Arrived in my mail today...
Busy day at work again yesterday, especially for lunch, and I made enough over the last week to pay rent! Yay! So good. And tonight is the UFC girl fight, so we will be busy again! w00t!

Plus, last night after work I went out with some co-workers for the first time. It was pretty insane. Ended up at a 35th birthday party for a friend of one of my coworker's friends in the rented top room of a bar in FiDi. There were strippers. It was weird. But hey, making new friends! Having fun! Hanging out with coworkers!

Also, I totes tripped and fell on black ice last night. Feet just went right out from under me and I landed SMACK on my ass, scraping up my right hand in the process. Ouch.

Pure Insanity

Yup. It was nuts last night.
Well, as insane as I thought Wednesday night was, last night was even crazier. Seriously. A walk-in party of 40? On a Wednesday? A party that felt like hanging out not in their seats or by their tables, but exactly in the aisle where I have to walk to and from the service station, usually with trays filled with drinks. I think I said "excuse me" or "I'm right behind you" or "pardon me" more last night than any other time in my life...

Hopefully, we made good money because I didn't get outta there until after midnight and am headed back for another long one today.

Also, had a dream that today's shift was really busy and I was working the dining room by the back door when a group came in and as I was about to seat them, MAMA WALKED IN! Yay! She was surprising me because she and Aunt Nadine had to be in NY for something! And I gave her a HUGE hug and then seated her in someone else's section (because they wanted high tops). It was such a relied to see her! I miss my family.

Sending positive vibes to la mama too for possible good job things! Get it, girl!

Still Learning

Carrying trays. All. Day. Long.
Whelp. Yesterday was busy. Like, busy busy! And pretty much up until 2am. It was nuts. There were a few large party reservations, but so many more large walk-in parties and there really weren't that many of us working, which meant TONS of tables, but more monies.

It was one of those days that just felt like no table was ever completely satisfied because I just had so many tables. And most of them were at least four-tops. It was fun though. It didn't even calm down until after midnight. It was nuts.

I have a feeling tonight is gonna be insane, too. There are no slow days this week with Beanpot Monday, yesterday being busy, tonight being Thursday, and Saturday is UFC.

Sunday will be a most glorious day off.

Beanpot Letdown

The hockey party from Monday night.
Realized I never talked about the 100-person buy out of the dining room from Monday night. They were a group of Alumi from Northeastern there to watch the Beanpot hockey finals against BU. Northeastern hadn't won since 1988. They lost. They lost in OT. And they lost in the first few minutes of OT. I wanted to give them all a hug and say I knew how they felt (Hello, final minutes of an important game less than a month ago...)

They were pretty devastated. But not nearly as devastated as we were when we took a look at their cash-and-carry tips. Pretty much, they were cheap. And we didn't make nearly as much money as we all thought we would. So, thanks for that NU alumni...

Still, it was better than a normal Monday close and it was fun to be so busy. With that on Monday, and the UFC girl fight on Saturday, it look like I'm gonna have no easy shifts this week. At least I'll make some monies, but come Sunday, girl is gonna be TIRED.

Getting Things Done

Hair cut pic!
I got things done today! Day off getting things done! Yes!

Woke up early, but was exhausted so I let myself sleep until 1130 and then immediately got up to do laundry since I was hoping to get mah her did at some point today. Unfortunately, my usual laundromat had no water, so I had to walk all the way, like, three blocks for the next laundromat which really WASN'T the closest one, the closest one was literally half a block farther, but instead I walked three blocks in the other direction. Carrying a month's worth of laundry... Yesh. Winner, winner. But laundry was done!

So I headed home to put everything away and remake my bed, and decided to call the closest Aveda salon to see if they'd have an appointment today and they DID! So, I hurried over there to get to the appointment and she did the color and cut and I bought groceries and now I'm home!

She did cut it a BIT shorter than I wanted, AND it's straight bob, which I haven't had in YEARS, but it's kinda fun. Plus, it's hair. It'll grow back. It was a bit pricey though... Yeah. As awesome as she was I dunno if I can afford her... We'll see...

Also, I totes think I look like a celebrity with this cut, but have no idea who...

Thanks for That

Those guys. Yup, those guys.
So... That moment when you realize your parents in South America are accidentally using your account to get money from South American ATMs and you call your bank's fraud department because you think that someone has hacked into your account to withdraw, like, $250 over three days...? Yeah, that's a fun moment. Especially when you have it when you're on the phone with the guy from your bank... I thought it was weird, but that's why I called and then realized what was happening.

Thanks for that, guys, no but really, it's much better than the alternative which was there was a super lazy criminal who stole my ATM card number to take out a little bit at a time...? Yeah. Exactly.

And now I'm about to head to my Monday closing shift, which shouldn't be as bad a it usually is because we have a 100-person buy out of the dining room, so we might actually make some monies. If, ya know, anyone comes into the rest of the restaurant. Of course, we also close at midnight, which always makes Monday closes bearable.

Snow Time Like Yesterday

Snowing so hard yesterday that my phone couldn't focus...
So I worked yesterday at noon and it started to snow right around 1pm and I don't think it stopped until 10 or 11 or so. I can always tell it's gonna be bad in BK when it's starting to stick in FiDi (somehow it always snows much more in BK and I still don't quite know why...), so this was my view when I got outta the subway yesterday.

I knew it was gonna snow yesterday, but did not quite think it was gonna snow THAT much...

Also, I found a great new bar about a 20-minute walk from my apartment! Yay! It has an outdoor area and stuff too, so come summertime it'll be ideal. Yay finally exploring the neighborhood! Finding things! Yay!

Niagara Frozen

Completely frozen! How cool is that?!
Check out Niagara Falls! It's insanely cold upstate right now and so things are absolutely nutballs at Niagara Falls. It just looks so cool. It's apparently -3 or so up there, so it's almost balmy down here in NYC. I'll take it.

Below Freezing. Way. Below. Freezing.

What I looked like. On my way to and from work.
So effing cold today. Well below freezing. And that windchill? Stop it. I am now sitting at home after a crazy-long lunch only shift (ugh). But I made the monies, so yay?

But I was bundled like WOAH on my ways to and from work. Cause it's SO. INCREDIBLY. COLD. Yesh. So cold. After work I got mah nails did (in a great mama color! It's a grey-purple! And I love it!), bought my secret Santa gift for our holiday party on Sunday(!), and popped into Century 21 to see if I could grab a sweater or two for cheapy and then I found TWO! FOR $16! One was $11 and one was $4.50! Yay NYC! Trying to keep warm!

Getting things done! Short day!

Tomorrow I work at noon and then I have a glorious day off. Yes. Day off. Focusing on that. Because it's gonna be cold tomorrow and probably no one is gonna come into the restaurant. So, I'll hopefully get cut early. Please and thank you.

Polar Vortex

See NYC? It's not the COLDEST, but... it's pretty damn freezing.
So, yeah. There's a polar vortex rolling through the East Coast starting today and going through tomorrow. Yup. That's a thing. It might get down to 3 degrees tonight. Three. Degrees. Right now my phone says it's 22, but it feels like it's 1, so the windchill is gonna suck too...

At least I was able to take one train home last night. As I was gearing up to head down into the subway to catch the 2 and then transfer and prepping myself for a long wait and a even longer transfer wait, I saw that the 3 was coming in 1 minute and I thought, "No... No. That can't be right. Someone must have messed up." But lo and behold! The 3 came tearing into the station and one train ride was all it took to bring me home! Before 3am! Yay!

Crossing my fingers for one train ride home again tonight, so send me good luck that I get outta there before midnight.

Slow Additions

New Full-Length Mirror!
Bought this yesterday! Made going out for my day off sorta worth it. It's blue.

Also, my light went out. But my Super at least came and took a look at the oven (which has been broken for a bit), realized that he needed to order a part and said he's gonna come back and officially fix it, bringing an electrician to check out the flickering lights in the kitchen and the living room and change the bulbs in the light in my room. Getting things done!

I close tonight and work a swing tomorrow. And, guess what? The 4 is back to not running between Brooklyn Bridge and Atlantic/Barclays. Awesome. Long road home tonight...

Survivor!

Cab Selfie!
Evidence that the three of us survived the freezing cold night out last Sunday! It was in a cab, so it really isn't that great of a picture, but hey, evidence!

I Want to Go to Here

The fountain at Bryant Park has been frozen for a few weeks. I really wanna see it.
Since I have to go to the stupid "mandatory" beer meeting at work today on my DAY OFF, I'm trying to make it worth my time, so I'm seriously considering heading uptown afterwards to check this rad thing out. Apparently, they have to get rid of some of the ice because it's too heavy and could ruin the fountain. But look! So pretty!

I also might see if I can find some other furniture out there... Since, again, I'm out anyway. We'll see. It's also snowing and very cold so I might just drag my angry ass to the beer meeting, sit there sulkily, and then head home.

We'll see...

NYC Nightlife

It's the menu!
Wolf & Deer, the bar Maridee and I went to on Friday. Their menus were in books.
Went out with Maridee on Friday, just for something to do since I now have a little energy and am not working 6-days a week and am actually getting to explore this lovely city! Parkslope with Maridee Friday.

Calexico, another great bar, and Paulo Gee's, amazing pizza
Then last night I hung out with Erin, a friend visiting from Seattle, and Jess where we went to this great pizza place in Greenpoint and then this warm and toasty bar in Bed-Stuy that had a fireplace in it! It was nice and warm on such a cold night.

Late Valentine's Valentines

I heart this e-card.
Yay! Sent this one to la mama and the seestor! Yay!

Bahahaha!
This one too!

More Evidence

Icicles on the security camera at the Bedford-Nostrand G stop.
It's been so cold that icicles formed INSIDE THE SUBWAY STATION. Yup. My close tonight should be the worst. At least the 4 is running normally again so I don't have to take two different trains home tonight...

Literally Freezing

Yesterday and today's weather. Note the "real feel" of -25 yesterday and -12 today.
So yeah. It's been cold. Really cold. I'm kinda dying here... I'm from the temperate PNW and this is beyond anything that I could understand. So... send me your warming vibes (from both Seattle and Buenos Aires). I could really use them.

I Can't Even...

I woke up to this on my phone. I have no response. I couldnt even imagine how to dress for this. Now I'm sitting at work. Still cold. Through my many, many layers. And Nanook of the North hat.

Also, Lindy's birthday! Happy Friday the 13th Birthday! Yay!

Lingering Snow

It's still around... Lingering...
It's weird. I've never lived anywhere where snow can just hangout on the edge of sidewalks and streets for months! It's taking some getting used to. Like, what footwear do I use? Snow boots for crossing the street? Rain boots with good tread for the puddles? Regular boots just hoping that I don't slip?

And now it's snowing again, but not sticking. It's going to keep being cold, too. And might snow again on Saturday and Tuesday... Blearg.

Mission: Accomplished

Plan for Tuesday. It was a success.
I not only did nothing, I didn't even post about doing nothing. Not even acknowledging on social media that I did nothing is perhaps the most winningest nothing thing ever.

Then yesterday I had all these grand plans, but woke up with my stomach a little bit upset, so I ended up not really being productive until I left for work last night.

It was another busy Wednesday, which is great for me! Yay more monies! And then today I am the late swing going in at 4 and then I'm the last cut before close. Hoping it's busy, but calms down and I can be cut before the 3 train stops running at midnight. Cross your fingers. Also, I open tomorrow, so really praying for a not-too-late night... Come on, karma!

My Dearest Wish...

So many stupid service changes... The. Worst.
So, I close tonight. Luckily, we close at midnight, but I won't be outta there before the MTA service changes go into effect. Since the 3 stops running at midnight, usually I would just take the 4 home (it runs local after 11 or so), but now the 4 isn't running between Brooklyn Bridge & Atantic/Barclays late at night this whole week, so I have to take the 2 and then transfer to the 4. It can add up to 45 minutes onto my commute. It's the worst.

Since I have tomorrow off work, and we close at 12am, I will probably just take the train home tonight, but I close Wednesday and am late night swing on Thursday, so I'll probably have to do this same horrible commute two other times this week. Leads me to a lovely conundrum: do I risk it and take the train home, knowing it'll take a crap-load more time than normal and give me a lot less time to sleep; OR do I pay the $20 or so to take a cab, knowing it'll get me to my place in 15 min? I hate this. When the 4 runs, it doesn't matter if I stand there and wait 20 min because it's all the same train, but when I have to switch trains it can end up being a 20 minute wait for the 2 and then another 20 to wait for the 4.

All I ask is that we have a busy night tonight so I make some monies, and then a fast out with little to no wait for my trains, getting me home within an hour. Cross your fingers for me...

Subway Beer?

Is that guy in the tan coat drinking a BEER on the subway?! At 230pm?! On a Sunday?!
Then there's this guy. I got cut from work today at 2pm because, well, there were TWO tables in the bar the WHOLE TIME I WAS THERE. I miss football already. Hopefully, March Madness will pick things right back up.

PS That guy isn't drinking a beer. I ended up sitting across from him and the bottle said some brand and then Kola. So, not a beer. But I was still amused.

Also, one week later... Still sad panda. But it's not the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning. Any more.

But, hey! This exists!

Faux-mie Time!

The bottle behind my drink says, "If I give you a quarter, will you give me a Pickle Back?" I died.
Bar-hopped with Jess last night. Hadn't seen her since before I was home for the Holidays when we went Xmas shopping together. It was great. The Winslow, the bar that made the drink above, infuses its g&t's with the "essence of the gin". Makes for pretty drinks, but the rose buds are not edible (I tried. Thought they were pom seeds...). The second one we had had pine and lemon in it. It tasted like the PNW.

Also, hit up a bar called Swift, which was too insane for the two of us (I mean, it WAS a Saturday night...), but apparently its a great bar on a weekday. Then we got Jess' fav slice in the city (supes yum!), and headed to a bar Jess said was crazy Seattle-like. It was. It was called the International Bar. Total hole-in-the-wall, heavy pour, crazy dive-y, grungey bartenders. Mecca-like Perfection.

THEN I went to another bar that a friend of mine told me was owned by Seattleites. They had The Stranger! And sold Tim's! So, obvi, I felt right at home (and bought a bag of jalapeño chips). Good times.

Yay! Curing me of my boredom! Doing NYC things! Hanging out with Jess!

My Namesake

Clearly this is MY mailbox
I pass this mailbox every time I head to the subway. It amuses me. I felt the need to share...

Please, Take Your Time

Fresh, but not so direct...
Well, my Fresh Direct order for Tues was fresh, but definitely came a good two hours after my delivery window... Very annoying and I was all prepared to be angry until I received an apology email and a "here's $5 off your next order" offer. Done and done.

Also, a little giftie arrived in Seattle for my seestor! So happy she likes it! Yeah! Birthday!

And I ordered a little giftie for me as well. A number of new bras! For cheapy! Online on a great website that Aislinn gave me!

Today, working lunch only was pretty great. Busy, (hopefully) made some monies and home by 430pm.

Tomorrow and Sunday I should be outta work early as well and hopefully will grab drinks and catch up with Jess one of those nights.

Surprise! It was Busy!

I mean, it wasn't insane, but for a Wednesday? I'll take it!
Well, I was fully planning on lamenting the fact that I had only one closing shift and it was a Wednesday and I have no money-making shifts this week, but then? Last night was great! I had a couple of big parties and a number of small tables that sat and DRANK for hours.

It was great. Made time go by quickly, let me make the monies, wasn't so busy that I felt overwhelmed. Overall, a nice night.

Today, I might meet up with some Seattle friends for a drink or something and tomorrow I work lunch only, so I should be outta there by 4 or so. Saturday and Sunday I open again and work relatively short shifts (or what I'm assuming will be short shifts since there are no sporting events and generally weekends are boring without the sports). Tomorrow I'll know my schedule for next week and get outta this weird one day off, one day on pattern that has been my schedule for the last week or so. It's been so strange. And very hard to feel any sort of continuity...

Slush Puddles

This is what it looks like at the end of the block. Crossing the street is treacherous.
It's nasty out there. I mean, it was worse yesterday morning before the temp dropped and the frozen rain/snow/slush turned into just snow, but the corner puddles are still legit.

Thank the gods I have snow boots. Dry feet are important.

Plans today include recovering from Superbowl, watching TV, getting my Fresh Direct order, and maybe meeting a friend for coffee or a movie or something tonight.

Low key.

Sad Times

This is how I felt yesterday. There were tears. There was booze. We will be back next year.

Hawks Trivia

More of this, please.
Last night, amongst the UFC fight night insanity, Shinabu called me and asked if I would come up with some Hawks trivia that they could ask tables during the Superbowl to give away swag. I, of course, said yes and came up with these 10 "medium hard" questions.

1) Which Hawks player famously asked, "You mad, bro?"
    *Bonus* Who did he ask?
2) What is the name of the Hawks mascot?
3) Where does Russell Wilson volunteer in his off time?
4) What did Michael Bennett do after the Hawks won the NFC Championship?
5) Who holds the playoff record for most yards after contact?
6) Who intercepted a Cam Newton pass, returning it for 90 yards and a pick 6 in the Hawks playoff game versus Carolina?
7) Which two Hawks players played together in college?
   *Bonus* Which college?
8) What is the nickname for the Hawks defensive secondary?
9) Which NFL team fired Pete Carroll in 2000?
10) Who did the Hawks trade to the Jets in October, prompting some people to say their season was over, but really inspiring the turn-around they needed?

You all are the besets if you can answer these without googling (really they aren't THAT hard).

Reminiscing: One Year Ago or Hawks Love Redux

Last year. 43-8 blow out. I think this year is gonna be closer.
One year ago I woke up early after getting home late from a show the night before. Heart beating outta my chest with nerves, excitement, anxiety and sat down and wrote this. Although some of the players have changed (Goodbye Tate, Browner, Harvin, Red Bryant and many others) the sentiment and excitement for the TEAM has remained, so I wanted to re-post somewhere. Here you go.

I’ve been struggling with how to word this explanation to my non-football loving, non-Seahawks fan friends and I am honestly not exactly sure if this proves my point or just proves that I am a bigger Hawks fan than even I thought, but I wanted to try to explain why this team is so amazing; why this Seahawks team has everything I love about sports and football and Seattle all in one and this is what I came up with.

This Seahawks team is special. I think they embody this city and Seattle sports better than any other team in our city’s history (at least in my lifetime). Better than the ’95 M’s (with Griffey and Edgar and that iconic doggy pile on home plate at a game I attended!). Better than the ’01 M’s (with Edgar and Ichiro and A-Rod back when he still was A-Rod and not that dick who left us for Texas (and then the Yankees) after lying and saying it wasn’t about the money). Better than the ’05 Hawks (with Hasselbeck and Alexander and that ’06 Super Bowl loss that should have been a win (even a REF admits those calls were horrible) and all the heartbreak that followed).  Better than getting an MLS team who constantly wins the Cascadia cup, but rarely gets any national attention. This Hawks team is different.

They are young. They are hungry. They have all the courage and hope and youth and excitement of a legacy in the making.

It’s our QB who is the same height as me, who volunteers at Children’s Hospital, who overcame a 3rd round draft pick and his share of nay-sayers and turned down a potential baseball career and proved to his coach that he was the guy, and became a starter. Who shattered records and scrambled out of the pocket, who made big plays in clutch moments. Who threw to Kerse in the endzone in traffic on a 4-and-7 free play to bring us ahead of the Niners in the NFC championship game. Who never seems rattled, who has learned when to throw and when to throw the ball away, who never stops looking downfield, who has made countless game-winning plays. Who has captured the heart of a city.

It’s our soft-spoken, all about the action, boss, Beast Mode on the field, terrified of public speaking and reporters, skittles-obsessed running back. Who breaks free of tackle after tackle after tackle, who keeps his feet moving, straight-arming defender after defender after defender looking to break free. Who wears down a defense knowing that big run play will come, and it always comes. Who keeps them worrying about #24 so #3 can do his thing. So #15 can catch the ball, so #89 can catch the ball, so #81 hopefully won’t drop the ball, so #11 can hopefully stay in the whole game. He is a playmaker. But the fear that he will make a big play is what allows so many of our other players to shine.

It’s our 6’3”, U mad, bro?, shit talking, amped up, Stanford grad CB with dreds down to there, whose mouth never stops moving, brain never stops churning, tape never stops rolling, who never stops studying, who talks the talk but also walks the walk. Who shows he’s the best CB week after week after week. Who makes the big plays. Who changes a game. Who has the most interceptions in the NFL. Who’s not afraid to tell it like it is, who may be controversial but never intended to be and who can explain, in his own words, clearly and eloquently, exactly why he became a scapegoat and apologize for the reaction but never apologize for feeling those feelings. Who is one quarter of the Legion of Boom, the only secondary in the NFL who has their own title. Who is one man in the machine that has become the BEST damn defense in the league. Who is my favorite player on the field.

And it’s not just the players (although they are all spectacular) and it’s not just the head coach (who 72 out of 200 current NFL players ranked as the top coach in the NFL they would want to play for), it’s so much more. This team has gotten into our psyche. They have become our friends, our family, our drinking buddies, our big brothers, our boyfriends, our husbands, our fathers, our boys. Our team. My team.

And that, THAT is why when I see them on that field, every man, every number, every name is special. They have that special something. That ‘x factor’. And they have us, the 12’s, who will cheer them on today, tomorrow, next year, next season, forever. But this team is something. This team has it. This is my team. This is our year. This is our game.

GO HAWKS!
